China's Environment: The Development Impact

Looking at the impact that China's development is having on the environment and the
socio-economic tensions being created; the response by the Chinese Authorities to
address this and the reality of implementing change as well as an overview of
British Business activities/opportunities in this area.

Sir Digby Jones Kt LLB (hons), D.Univ, D.Litt. DL, CIMgt, FRI Director General,
CBI After 17 years with Edge & Ellison, Digby joined KPMG in '98, becoming
Director-General of the CBI on 1 January 2000. He has taken the business message to
over 60 different countries since he was appointed. In 1998, as Chairman of the
Birmingham Hospice Appeal, he personally raised ?18,000 towards their target by
cycling from John O'Groats to Lands End. On 17 April 2005, he raised ?91,000 for
both Cancer Research UK and UNICEF by running the Flora London Marathon. He was
appointed a Knight Bachelor in the 2005 New Year Honours List.
Michael Fosh: Chief Rep. Herbert Smith LLP
After reading Chinese and Portuguese at Leeds Michael studied law in the UK, moving
to Hong Kong in the early '90s to work for Herbert Smith. He moved to Beijing in
2002, now a partner for the company and chief representative of the Beijing office.
He was elected Vice Chairman for the British Chamber of Commerce in Beijing in
2004, is a valuable member of our team offering his legal expertise and acting as a
great advocate for Britain.
Barry Livett, Director EU FS Project
EU-China Financial Services Co-operation Project, Securities Industry Project Co-
ordinator & Director, a Fellow of the Securities Institute in London, holds the
Securities Institute's Diploma (SIE Dip.) and has an MSc International Banking and
Financial Studies. His background is mainly Asia-oriented & combining regulatory
and securities markets experience with a broad merchant banking background from
corporate advisory services within Morgan Grenfell Asia and DBS Bank in Singapore;
at Bank of China International and Raphael Zorn Hemsley in London and includes
advising the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and other regulators throughout Asia.
Jennifer Coleman: Director,Coleman Consults
A Chartered Physicist, MSc in Energy and the Environment, and freelance consultant
in the area of sustainable development and risk management. Currently working with
DEFRA and DFID on the development of the industrial component of the UK-China
Sustainable Development Dialogue. Head of the British Chamber's Sustainable
Development Forum Jennifer is also working on an EU project looking at the
feasibility of introducing benchmarking techniques to promote energy efficiency in
heavy industry.
