Managers today need to develop strategy where competition, cooperation and
regulation are taking place on a global scale. International competition has always
been present, but our economies today seem propelled by relatively recent
technological developments, improved transportation systems, international
financial markets, liberalisation of international trade.
At the same time most large corporations and many smaller firms have long been
interested in their position within society, in their environmental and social
impact, and in their contribution to economic development. Nevertheless, in recent
years many people worry about the meaning of the numerous cases of misconduct by
senior executives of very large corporations and public officials.
We know that while markets have both similarities and differences, there seems to
be convergence of markets, often called globalisation. Does this mean there is
agreement around the world about what is acceptable responsible behaviour and
ethical practices? If there is no universal agreement how then do multinationals
develop consistent ethical policies given the differences their executives meet in
doing business in different markets?
This seminar will invite members to think about the concept of strategy in a global
business environment. Members will also consider the ethical and socially
responsible challenges that corporations face in doing business globally.
Dr Lez Rayman-Bacchus leads two postgraduate courses where these and other issues
are examined: MA Corporate Social Responsibility, and MSc Global Business Strategy.
